Kampot Province Witnesses Rare Deer Sighting in Teuk Chhou District

Kampot: Residents of Prey Tnaot village, Kampong Kreng commune, in Teuk Chhou district of Kampot province, reported seeing a deer roaming a local plot of land at around 6 pm on February 25, 2024. The unexpected visitor, identified as a male deer, is believed to have descended from Bokor Mountain in search of water and possibly, mates.

Chuon Sara, Director of the Kampot Provincial Forestry Administration, shared insights with EAC News regarding the deer's behavior. "The deer ventured from its natural habitat to quench its thirst and graze. Its presence in the village was noted with curiosity, but it posed no threat to the local residents," he explained.

Upon notification by the villagers, the Forestry Administration coordinated with rangers from Phnom Tamao to safely capture and temporarily hold the deer for its protection. Initially, there were plans to relocate the deer to Phnom Tamao. However, following its natural instincts, the deer returned to Bokor Mountain, where it was decided to let it continue its life in its natural habitat.

Deer in Cambodia are recognized as a Conservation species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, signifying their critical status in specific regions. These animals inhabit protected areas across the country's north-southwest and northeastern regions, thriving in diverse environments from dense forests to swamps. Despite their adaptability, deer populations face threats from commercial hunting, targeted for their horns, skin, and bones, making sightings like this both rare and significant for conservation efforts.
